The X Caddis is a productive dry fly with a slightly different design than the traditional Elk Hair Caddis. Tied by Umpqua Signature Tyer Craig Mathews, the X Caddis is slightly thinner, slightly longer with a pronounced tail and a dubbing body. Use this fly during Caddis hatches when trout are feeding on the surface and want something slightly more refined than an Elk Hair Caddis. This fly also works well as a dry-dropper setup and the elk hair keeps it high on the surface of the water even with a dropper. That being said, the body of the fly sinks slightly lower than the Elk Hair Caddis so it's more visible to the fish. This is a great pattern for Colorado, Idaho, Montana as well as New Zealand and other fisheries where Caddis are prevalent. This would also be a great pattern for small backcountry streams and creeks, especially when targeting Cutthroat Trout or native fish.

14, 16
