The Story

An essential streamer that no fly angler should ever be caught without, the Wooly Bugger Streamer is a fly that matches an extensive variety of critters and can fool everything from hungry brookies, fat Smallmouth Bass, and even those lazy carp sitting on a bed of mud. The Wooly Bugger was designed in Pennsylvania by Russell Blessing in the year 1967 as an imitation for dobsonfly larvae, and Russell used the fly to catch local smallmouth bass. It wasn’t long after its creation that anglers found that the Wooly Bugger could be used to catch a diverse range of fresh and saltwater species that few other flies could compete with, and despite being tied to match immature dobsonflies, depending on the size and color chosen, the Wooly Bugger can effectively match everything from small minnows like the Blacknose Dace all the way to large, swimming Hex nymphs and even salamanders and leeches.

The Wooly Bugger is a fly that can be fished in almost any type of water, and whether it' a deep pool, a fast river, a small pond, or a massive lake, this fly will catch fish. And just as it can cover a ton of water types, it can also be fished in just as many ways. Whether you want to high stick nymph it through a run under an indicator, slowly strip it upstream, or give a quick hand-over-hand retrieve in stillwater, the Wooly Bugger is a fly that you can fish with confidence.
