Looks like a feather but swims as well as your favorite natural fur, unique and useful over a wide range of applications, Whiting's Bird Fur is a patch of feathers like nothing else. These birds are bred to have feathers that mimic expensive Spey hackles, and with long, fine, and flowing fibers coupled with a thin stem, these feathers do an excellent job whether you're tying shrimp patterns, saltwater baitfish, or typical steelhead/salmon flies. Whiting's Bird Fur patches have a wide assortment of feather sizes, allowing you to wrap most small to large patterns, and with Whiting's excellent range of colors, you'll always be able to find what you need. While Bird Fur may not offer the appeal of some of the more expensive feathers such as Heron, it's a solid choice whenever you need to stock your box without a high price tag.
Uses
Bird Fur is a versatile feather with a range of applications, and with its long wispy fibers, these feathers provide excellent movement and flow in the water. Whiting designed Bird Fur with steelhead/salmon flies in mind and these feathers make for an excellent choice in hackle when tying Spey, Dee, and shrimp flies; however, the crafty tier is sure to come up with a wealth of uses for these unique feathers-one of our favorites is David Nelson's technique of stacking a few of these feathers on top of one another before tying them in as a tail on streamers designed to be swung for striped bass and large trout.
Comparisons
With their Bird Fur, Whiting bred some pretty unique feathers that you won't typically find on any other types of chicken. The fibers on these feathers are long and wispy and the fine stem allows for easy wrapping, characteristics that few other feathers easily found on the market possess. Although Bird Fur offers a look of its own, Schlappen would be an okay substitute, especially if you strip off one side of the feather in order to reduce the density of the feather. However, if you're looking for that wispy appearance found on certain Spey and Dee style flies and don't want to start collecting rare feathers, it's best to go with Whiting's Bird Fur.
