From Atlantic salmon flies to tiny bonefish bugs, Wapsi Badger Fur is one of those natural materials that run the gamut of fly-tying versatility. Badger Fur has nice long guard hairs that are perfect for tying in wings and collars on streamers and salmon/steelhead flies, and its cream underfur makes for a solid natural dubbing that works whether you're tying nymphs or making a dubbing loop for larger patterns. Wapsi Badger Fur comes in two different sizes, so whether you're just testing this material out or want to stock up, there's an option for both. From days spent stripping streamers along the Great Lakes tributaries to afternoons on a flat feeding striped bass tiny shrimp, Badger Fur has you covered for just about anything you want to tie.
Uses
Badger Fur offers quite a bit of versatility at the vise, and although it's commonly used to tie wings and collars on baitfish and steelhead/salmon flies, this fur has many other applications too. With its long, rigid guard hairs, Badger Fur works well for tailing material on nymphs, dry flies, and even poppers, and it can also be used for backs on crustaceans; the soft underfur is also a great choice as a dubbing material, either on its own or blended with other materials.
Comparisons
Badger Fur has pretty unique characteristics and colors, and there really aren't a ton of comparable materials out there. But if you need a quick substitute, your best bet is probably American Opossum Fur. American Opossum has a similar coloration with fibers that are on the long side, though not nearly as long as Badger Fur.
