An arguably undervalued gamefish, barracuda can be a blast on the fly, and whenever you are targeting them on a tropical flat, they are just a bit more special. While they're often viewed as a top gamefish, bonefish are actually a common food source for large flats-living barracuda and shark, and that's why the Cuda Killer Fly was created to imitate juvenile bonefish. Crafted with a large profile that matches that of a bonefish and designed to be cast easily, the Cuda Killer Fly was created by Henry Cowen, and it was quickly found as a top-producing barracuda fly when on the flats. One of the more famous stories is the time that Henry lost a Cuda Killer to a large fish, only to tie another Cuda Killer on and catch the fish on the next cast.
The Cuda Killer Fly is a great searching pattern on flats and it should be fished with a quick retrieve to mimic the behavior of immature bonefish. Cast it into the mangroves, off of channel drops, or towards the open ocean and you will find why this is such a favorite pattern among southern guides.
