The St. Croix Tannic Musky/Pike Fly Rod is your dedicated tool for the relentless pursuit of apex predators. Weve all been there: shoulders burning after hours of chucking water-logged flies the size of a small bird, only to have a follow-up eat happen feet from the boat. This rod was born from that exact moment. It leverages a unique carbon fiber blend and a purpose-driven taper that dramatically reduces casting fatigue without sacrificing the raw power needed to punch out massive streamers and execute a perfect figure-eight. The result is a rod that feels surprisingly light in hand but has the backbone to drive a hook home and control the chaos that follows, making it the ultimate ally in dark, weedy water where giants lurk.
Blank
At the heart of the Tannic series is an advanced blank built with St. Croixs SCIV+ carbon fiber. This is not a standard graphite; its a hybrid material that blends the high-modulus, high-strain sensitivity of SCIV carbon with the super-high modulus strength of SCVI carbon. This combination creates a remarkably lightweight yet powerful blank. The taper is fast and progressive, designed to load with a short, powerful casting stroke, turning over heavy lines and wind-resistant flies with authority. Despite its power, it provides crucial feedback, so you can feel the rod load, preventing the "broomstick" feel common in other big-game rods. The entire blank is finished in a deep, rich "Tannic" color with subtle, clean wraps, reflecting the stained waters it was designed to conquer.
Guides
The guide train is meticulously selected to maximize casting distance and durability under extreme pressure.
- Stripping Guides: Fuji K-Series Alconite guides are used for their tangle-free frame design, which sheds aggressive line coils and prevents frustrating knots during the cast. The Alconite rings are diamond-polished for a slick, hard surface that minimizes friction and withstands the abuse of heavy, textured fly lines.
- Snake Guides: The running guides are Sea Guide PVD-coated snakes. This Physical Vapor Deposition coating creates an incredibly slick and durable surface that allows the line to shoot effortlessly, while also providing excellent corrosion resistance for long-term performance.
Reel Seat
A heavy-duty, machined-aluminum reel seat anchors your setup with absolute security. It features dual up-locking rings to ensure that a large arbor reel wont wobble or work its way loose during a long day of casting or a violent headshake. The entire component is anodized in a flat black finish for superior corrosion and scratch resistance. Function dictates form here, extending to the oversized, EVA-trimmed fighting butt that provides critical leverage when performing boat-side figure-eights and offers a comfortable bracing point during prolonged fights.
Rod Tube
Each Tannic rod comes protected in a premium, nylon-covered rod tube with a reinforced handle and zipper closure. Inside, a divided polypropylene liner separates and safeguards each rod section from scratches and impact. A matching cloth rod sack is also included for an extra layer of protection and convenient organization.
Warranty
This rod is backed by the St. Croix Superstar Service, a 15-year transferable warranty. This warranty covers defects in materials or craftsmanship. It does not cover damage from accidents, misuse, or normal wear and tear. Should your rod require service, a nominal fee is typically charged for repair or replacement under the warranty program.
