The Story

Simms Freestone Wading Pants are built for anglers who want to stay dry and breathe easy, without that clammy, plastic-bag feel that ruins a long day in the river. These are stockingfoot wading pants, so you can pair them with your favorite wading boots and keep the setup light for warm weather and shallow wades.

Features

Fabric - These pants use durable, breathable Toray QuadraLam 4-layer fabric in both the upper and lower. The 4-layer build adds structure and toughness for brushy banks, knee-deep rock gardens, and repeated kneeling at the waterline. Because the same 4-layer layup runs throughout, the pants keep a consistent feel and don’t get flimsy through the seat or legs. The material is made to move with you, so you can climb in and out of the boat or hop boulders without fighting your gear. It also keeps bulk down compared to heavier chest waders, which helps on hot days when full coverage is overkill.

Suspension / Fit System - An integrated stretch elastic wading belt works with the built-in 2 inch belt loops to keep the pants snug and secure. The belt helps seal the fit at the waist and adds a layer of safety when you are wading deeper runs. A gusseted fit and a zippered fly improve comfort and make on and off simpler, especially when you are changing at the truck or layering for a cool morning start. The cut is designed for mobility, so you can take big steps and crouch low while landing fish or adjusting a drift.

Pocket Configuration - Two hip pockets keep small tools and river essentials close and easy to reach. The pockets include drain holes so water does not pool inside when you wade. These pockets are not waterproof, so keys and a phone should go in a separate dry storage solution.

Storage/Pockets

The storage is built around quick access at the hips, which is useful when you are wearing a wading belt or moving through tight brush and do not want bulky chest storage in the way. Hip pocket placement stays easy to reach while standing in current, and it works well when you are wearing a pack since you are not digging under shoulder straps. The pockets are designed to shed water through drain holes, so you do not carry extra weight after a deep step or a sit on a wet rock. For durability in high-wear areas, the pant uses a seam layout that supports an articulated fit and helps reduce stress through the legs when you walk, climb, and kneel. Patented front and back leg seams add mobility and help protect the areas that see the most movement, which is where wear and leaks often start over time.

Suspension System

These wading pants use a streamlined waist-belt setup instead of shoulder straps, which keeps your upper body free and cooler in warm conditions. The adjustable stretch elastic wading belt lets you fine-tune fit whether you are wearing a thin baselayer or a thicker piece on a cold morning. The stockingfoot booties are anatomically engineered neoprene, which helps reduce bunching inside your boots and keeps comfort steady on long walks from the access point to the run.

Why We Like It

Freestone Wading Pants make a strong case for anglers who fish a lot of warm days, where chest waders feel like too much but wet wading is not enough. You get a tough, breathable 4-layer Toray build that is ready for rock, gravel, and bank work, plus a clean waist-high design that keeps heat down and movement up. The gusseted, zippered fly is a small detail that matters on real fishing days, and the patented leg seam design helps the pants move naturally instead of binding at the knee. If you liked older Freestone fits, note that this version runs smaller than the previous one, and sizing up a full size is often the safer play.

Other Features

The gusseted construction supports stride and comfort when you are stepping over downed trees or climbing out on steep cutbanks. The zippered fly improves day-to-day convenience and helps the pants feel more like true fishing pants, not just a trimmed-down chest wader. Patented front and back leg seams create a more articulated shape for better mobility and added durability where constant motion can wear fabric faster.
