The Story

From bluegill and crappie to perch and bass, panfish on the fly is one of those things that's just downright fun, and for those of us who enjoy the occasional break from fast-action graphite for things like glass, slower-action rods, and bamboo, Scientific Anglers' Mastery Panfish Fly Line is just the right choice. A true-to-weight configuration makes for easy casting with excellent feedback, while SA's AST Plus helps you get the distance you need to make those mid-pond shots when the 'gills haven't made their way closer to shore yet, and for tight-quarters casting, this line's 45' head and 6' front taper combine to make roll casting a dream. Available in line weights 2 through 6, the Mastery Panfish series accommodates all panfish pursuits you'll find yourself in--from dry fly fishing on a farm pond to rolling streamers down deep for slab crappie, this line is a solid choice for it all.

Features

AST Plus Slickness Additive - Whether you’re shooting line across a pond to that floating dock or bombing one into the lily pads, Scientific Anglers’ AST Plus ensures excellent durability and shootabilty. AST Plus is SA’s new formulation of their patented dry-slick technology that’s 50% slicker than their previous formula and up to 200% more durable than other lines on the market. A solid addition, AST Plus makes your line float higher, last longer, and shoot further.

Improved Dry Tip - Scientific Anglers' Improved Dry Tip is a unique series of microballoons that makes your tip float twice as high as a standard fly line--panfish are known to strike quickly, this tech undoubtedly gives you an upper hand when you need to make fast hooksets whether stripping a streamer or working a popper.

SA Line ID - When it comes to fishing, it’s important to remove every bit of error you can, and Scientific Anglers’ Line ID makes it easy to always grab the right line or spool. A quick identifier, SA Line ID is an integrated marking system in the first 1’-2’ of the tip section that ensures you won’t accidentally drive to the lake with a 3-weight line and a 6-weight rod.

Welded Loops - With strong welded loops on both the leader to fly line connection and the backing to fly line connection, this line makes it as easy as can be to quickly rig your reel and adjust your leader setup however you need.

Uses

Streamers, Poppers, Nymphs, and Terrestrials

The Master Panfish Fly Line was built around slower-action rods and those made of glass and bamboo, however, it's true-to-weight build and specialized taper allows you to present anything from lightweight Clouser Minnows to small nymphs and all the way to air-resistant poppers. This line allows you to fish your entire panfish box while enjoying every part of it, but if you want a panfish line that'll load fast-action rods a bit deeper, SA's Amplitude Smooth Panfish Line is a great option.

Temp

Moderate to warm - From the first panfish after ice out to the warmest days of summer, this line stands up to every moderate to warmwater environment you find yourself in without it getting limp or stiff.

Taper/Weight

Scientific Anglers built their Mastery Panfish Line to handle all panfish situations and designed the taper and its true-to-weight configuration to work flawlessly with slower-action graphite rods, as well as glass and bamboo fly rods. This taper takes SA's popular Mastery taper and adapts it to a panfish line with a 45' head and 6' front taper that allows for solid distance while being able to cut through wind and roll cast your way to the outside of the shoreline weeds.
