The Story

A simple crab pattern that you can rely on to catch anything from permit to striped bass, the Permit Crab Fly makes it easy to imitate most inshore crab species. The Permit Crab is a great fly for fishing flats, tidal estuaries, open beaches, and small channels. Tied with hackle claws, a synthetic body, rubber legs, and dumbbell eyes, this fly has tons of naturally enticing movement and it rides with its hook point up so that you can cast into sod banks and mangroves without fear.

The Permit Crab can be fished anytime you think crabs are prevalent--fish it from late spring into early fall in the northeast and almost anytime you're in a warm to tropical environment. To fish the Permit Crab Fly, it's important to test out a few different striper retrieves to really dial in what the fish like, but as a rule of thumb, it's always a good idea to hug the bottom of the water column and include a few pauses in your retrieve. Commonly fished in sizes 1/0-4, this is a crab that should be a staple no matter what saltwater species you're after.
