The Story

Old Mariner Offshore Series Fly Reel (Lever Drag) is built for anglers who push fly tackle into bluewater - tarpon, GT, tuna, and anything that tests a reel’s core. It delivers the confidence of a true lever drag in a salt-ready platform, pairing smooth stopping power with fast pickup and intuitive control. Whether you need a first serious big-game reel, a dependable guide backup, or a travel-ready fish-fighting tool, this reel hits the sweet spot of performance, value, and durability.

Design

Fully machined full-cage frame keeps thin running lines from escaping under pressure and preserves stiffness under heavy drag. A large-arbor, concave spool maximizes capacity without sacrificing pickup speed, while generous porting sheds weight and helps lines dry quickly. The lever features positive detents with clearly marked strike and full positions, plus a compact preset dial to set peak drag before the first cast. A radiused spool lip protects leaders, and the palming rim provides added control during close-quarters battles. Tool-free, captive spool release makes swaps fast on the skiff.

Finish

Type III hard anodizing over 6061-T6 aluminum resists scratches and salt corrosion, with stainless fasteners for long-term reliability. The matte, low-glare finish shrugs off boat rash and sun, while laser-indexed drag and lever markings stay legible season after season. Built for saltwater use - rinse after salt sessions and it is ready for the next run.

Materials

Frame and spool are CNC-machined from bar-stock 6061-T6 aluminum for the best strength-to-weight balance and precise tolerances. The main shaft and hardware use 316 marine-grade stainless steel for corrosion resistance. The drag stack combines carbon fiber and polished stainless interfaces for smooth startup and high heat tolerance, with Viton O-rings and a sealed housing to keep salt and grit out. A textured polymer handle knob maintains grip when wet without chewing up knuckles.

Drag

Type: Sealed multi-disc lever drag designed for repeatable strike and full settings. Direct-drive operation keeps you connected to the fish, with minimal startup and a consistent pressure curve from light tippet protection to heavy stopping power.

Materials: Carbon fiber discs mated to hardened stainless plates, factory-lubed with high-temp, water-resistant grease. Viton seals protect the drag cavity, and a one-way roller clutch isolates the drag from contamination while providing secure engagement under load.

Arbor Size

Large arbor with a deep, concave profile. Benefits include faster line pickup when fish charge the boat, reduced line memory for cleaner casts, and ample backing capacity for long runs common in offshore fights.

Warranty

Limited lifetime warranty to the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship as of October 2025. Normal wear, finish wear, improper maintenance, impact damage, and corrosion from neglect are not covered. Non-warranty service and parts are available for a reasonable fee, and proof of purchase may be required.
