The Story

It is rare to find a saltwater pattern that can match a wide variety of baitfish and can cast foul-free for long periods of time—luckily, Dave Skok's Mushmouth Fly has the formula figured out. After years of fishing the Atlantic surf, Dave created this fly as a way to imitate anything from small silversides to large river herring. The Mushmouth is tied similarly to lots of other synthetic baitfish patterns, but it differs in that it is equipped with a flexible tail/spine that prevents fouling. An interesting concept not seen in many flies before, this allows you to cast this fly all day long without fear of it fouling around the hook's bend.

The Mushmouth Fly takes an approach that other flies haven't, but it is also a fish-catching machine; whether you are pursuing striped bass, albies, weakfish, snook, tarpon, bluefish, or almost any other predatory fish, this fly gets the job done. Fish it all year long in warm to tropical environments and from spring through fall in the northeast, the Mushmouth Fly is a pattern that no saltwater box is complete without.
