From micro Surf Candies to chase pelagic tuna to beer-bottle sized streamers for musky, Just Add H2O's Slinky Fibre can do it all. Slinky Fibre is a crinkled synthetic material that's durable, comes in a ton of colors, and can be used in both fresh and saltwater patterns. Slinky Fibre makes it easy to tie large flies, and it's a good substitute for bucktail whenever you're limited by the natural length. This is a material that's easy to work with and can be blended with flash when you want a look that stands out, and it has translucent properties that few other materials can match. Whether you're looking to whip up some large herring patterns for the spring saltwater season in the northeast or need a super strong tail on a gurgler for smallmouth, Slinky Fibre is a material that does it all.
Uses
Just Add H2O's Slinky Fibre is a very versatile material with a bunch of different applications. While Slinky Fibre is most commonly used as tail and wing fibers on streamer patterns (both large and small), it can also be used for other tying purposes like: being worked into a dubbing brush, crafting small yet realistic crustaceans such as shrimp, coating it in UV Resin for excellent translucency on flies like Surf Candies, and even building bulky heads like the one on Jonny King's famous Kinky Muddler. And because Slinky Fibre sheds water so easily on a backcast, it's a great material to work into massive streamers for a variety of esox species or large predatory saltwater fish. A material that adds realism and ease of use for any fly you can come up with, Slinky Fibre is a material that's always worth having on hand.
Comparisons
While other synthetics exist on the market, none are exactly like Slinky Fibre. One material that's closely similar is Steve Farrar's SF Blend. SF Blend is actually a combination of Slinky Fibre and a very fine flash, so it's almost exactly like Slinky Fibre but it's pre-blended with flash, making it a great choice for flashy baitfish patterns. On the natural side of things, bucktail is a material that shares some similarities in that it sheds water quickly, often has a nice crinkled appearance, and comes in a variety of colors, but where the two differ is that Slinky Fibre is generally more durable, its size and consistency is more uniform, it offers much more translucency than bucktail, and bucktail has a built-in taper where Slinky Fibre is a level material that's the same diameter throughout.
Example Flies
Slinky Fibre is one of those materials with a ton of uses and one that we all seem to have our favorite purpose for. However, some of the popular flies that use Slinky Fibre are:
- Surf Candies
- Ultra Shrimp
- Kinky Muddler
