The Story

Ostrich Herl is a great material to use on a variety of streamers and nymphs. Hareline Ostrich Herl comes in a variety of colors to provide the avid tyer with as many options as possible. Many anglers use this material to tie Scuds and other nymphs because of its slightly stiffer fibers and because of the clean, durable nature of the herl. These packages provide enough herl to tie dozens of flies and the herls are easy to cut off of the feather and tie into your fly.

Uses

Patterns and Tying Techniques - The Ostrich Herl is most well-known for its place in Scuds, Sowbugs, and other tailwater nymphs. That being said, a lot of anglers also use it to replace Marabou in classic streamer patterns like the Wooly Bugger because the fibers are stiffer and hold up well in deeper water and after many fish.

Comparisons

Ostrich Herl vs Marabou - Marabou is often used in streamers because of its flowing capabilities and flexibility. Ostrich Herl, on the other hand, is much stiffer and slightly more durable than Marabou. If you're fishing streamers in smaller water for picky/smaller fish, Marabou is a fine option. If you're targeting larger fish in larger water, use Ostrich Herl for a more durable fly.

Example Flies

Nymphs, Streamers - The Sowbug, Scud, and other tailwater bugs are tied with Ostrich Herl. You can also use Ostrich Herl for other nymph backs and bodies. As aforementioned, it works well in larger streamers, too, like the Wooly Bugger and others.

Pack Size and Physical Description

Approximate Dimensions - The Ostrich Feather that comes in a pack is roughly 10-12 inches long and the herls are approximately a few inches in length.
