The Story

With their Magic Quills, Hareline makes getting clean and consistent segmented bodies as easy as can be. These Magic Quills are translucent, waterproof, and super easy to work with so you can achieve natural segmentation whether you're tying a nymph, emerger, dry fly, or pupa. Designed with a dark strip (that varies by size) down the center and translucent sides, Magic Quills allow the underbody to shine through while creating perfectly consistent segmentation. Available in three different sizes, these synthetic quills can be adapted to a wide range of fly patterns and styles.

Uses

Magic Quills are most commonly used to add natural segmentation to patterns like nymphs--especially Euro and Czech Nymphs, emergers, dry flies, midges, and pupae. Often wrapped over thread or colored markers, the translucency of Magic Quills lets the underbody of your flies shine through to give a natural appearance. Hareline's Magic Quills are super easy to work with, and they pair great with UV Resins to create realistic and super durable flies.

Comparisons

Hareline's Magic Quills are similar to Hareline's Tapered Synthetic Quills, which are essentially the same product but with a tapered strip down the middle instead of it being one size. The Tapered Synthetic Quills are an equally good choice for segmenting flies, but their taper naturally increases the size of the segments on your fly as you progress forward. While both are great options, it can pay off to have a variety of different segmenting styles in your box to ensure that you're always prepared with what the fish want.

Example Flies

Although the original Perdigon doesn't call for Magic Quills, they are a popular choice when tying this pattern and give it a great look without having to do much work.
