Fox Squirrel Tail is a versatile natural material with a variety of different uses. Fox Squirrel is a hair that isn’t hollow, so while it doesn’t make for great dry fly applications, it’s an excellent fiber for tying things like hairwing streamers, wet fly wings, crayfish and crab claws, and it can even be used for tying tails on nymphs and bass bugs as well as legs on nymphs.

Comparisons

Hareline’s Gray Fox Tail is a very similar option in that it’s a tail from a very similar squirrel. Both of these tails can be used to just about the same flies, and the main difference between these two is the color–as the name implies, Gray Squirrel Tails have fibers that range in color from grey to white to black, while a Fox Squirrel Tail has various shades of rusts, browns, and blacks. While both of these tails are a fine fly tying material, your choice will really come down to what color you’re looking for and which color tail will match your forage best.
