When To Go

Gaspé Coastal’s fishing season runs from early June through late September, with different fisheries peaking at different times. June offers early-season Atlantic Salmon, including some of the largest fish of the year, along with prime Striped Bass sight-fishing on the flats. July is ideal for dry-fly Salmon fishing and continues to produce excellent Striped Bass action. August brings consistent weather and great opportunities for both Striped Bass and sea-run Brook Trout, while September marks the return of cooler water and ideal conditions for Atlantic Salmon, often with fewer anglers and spectacular scenery.

 

Atlantic Salmon

Gaspé Coastal provides access to some of the most iconic Atlantic Salmon rivers in the world, including the Bonaventure, Grand Cascapédia, and Petite Cascapédia. These ultra-clear, cobble-bottomed rivers are perfectly suited for visual fishing techniques, where spotting fish before the cast is often part of the experience. The season opens in early June with the arrival of fresh, powerful multi-sea-winter Salmon. While the early weeks are best suited for wet flies and traditional swing tactics, dry-fly fishing begins to shine by late June and peaks in July and August as water temperatures rise. This is one of the few places on earth where anglers can reliably target large Atlantic Salmon on dead-drift dry flies in daylight conditions. Fish sizes range from grilse to true trophies over 30 pounds, and the guiding program emphasizes conservation, river rotation, and catch-and-release practices to preserve this world-class fishery.

 

Striped Bass

Gaspé Coastal offers a unique Canadian saltwater experience: sight-fishing Striped Bass from a poling skiff on shallow flats. Along the southern shoreline of the peninsula, seasonal schools of Striped Bass push into less than three feet of water. Sight-fishing opportunities are common, whether targeting cruising fish or intercepting flashing pods. Most fish range from 2 to 10 pounds, with occasional chances at larger bass. Anglers use single-hand rods from 6 to 9-weight, and productive patterns include shrimp, crabs, and small baitfish. The prime season runs from June through August.

 

Brook Trout

Though not a primary target at Gaspé Coastal, Brook Trout can be found in select tributaries and remote headwater streams. These native fish are brilliantly colored and quick to rise to a dry fly or chase down a streamer. In addition to resident trout, some rivers in the region also see the return of sea-run Brook Trout each summer. These “salters” reenter freshwater from nearby estuaries and are often larger and silvery in color. While not always available, Brook Trout offer a rewarding bonus for anglers willing to explore beyond the main salmon beats.

Equipment

The fishing program at Gaspé Coastal spans both freshwater and saltwater environments, so anglers should come prepared with a mix of rods and lines. For Atlantic Salmon, a 9 to 9.5-foot single-hand rod in 7 to 9-weight is ideal, paired with a quality floating line and long leaders. Two-handed rods are optional and can be helpful on wider pools, especially for anglers familiar with Spey techniques.

For Striped Bass, 6 to 9-weight single-hand rods are common, with a floating line being the primary choice for sight-fishing on the flats. An intermediate line can be useful for deeper cuts or fishing larger baitfish patterns when bass are holding off the edge of the flats.

Itinerary

Day 1: From Home to Gaspé Coastal

Gaspé Coastal’s standard 6-night, 5-day program runs from Monday to Sunday, but custom packages can be arranged for varying lengths of stay. Travel to the Gaspé Peninsula typically begins with a flight to Bathurst, New Brunswick (ZBF), often via Air Canada’s daily service from Montreal (YUL). Upon arrival, the Gaspé Coastal team will provide a 1.5-hour ground transfer to the lodge. Other arrival options include flights into Bonaventure (YVB) via Pascan Aviation or charter, or rail service to Campbellton, New Brunswick. All standard transfers from Bathurst, Bonaventure, or Campbellton are included in the package. Upon reaching Nadeau House in Cascapedia-Saint-Jules, guests will settle in, enjoy dinner, and meet the staff for an orientation.

 

Days 2 - 6: The Fishing Days

Each morning begins with breakfast at Nadeau House. On early start days, like those targeting Salmon, guests will be provided with a convenient grab-and-go breakfast. For later departures, a full made-to-order breakfast is served in the dining room. Atlantic Salmon are pursued on foot or from traditional poling canoes, depending on water levels and river access. Striped Bass are targeted on the coastal flats using technical poling skiffs. Your guide team will adjust your daily plan based on tides, water clarity, and conditions to maximize success. Lunch is packed each day and enjoyed riverside or on the boat. Evenings feature cocktails, appetizers, and family-style chef-prepared dinners back at Nadeau House.

 

Day 7: From Gaspé Coastal to Home

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred back to your departure hub — typically Bathurst (ZBF), Bonaventure (YVB), or Campbellton — to begin your journey home. Most commercial return routes connect through Montreal.

After a long day of fishing, guests return to the lodge for a relaxed social hour followed by a hearty home-cooked dinner. Gaspe Coastal hosts just 6 to 8 anglers per week, keeping the experience personalized. While the lodge controls access to several private salmon beats, some of the salmon water is public and can see moderate pressure during peak weeks. The saltwater flats, by contrast, are lightly pressured and rarely shared with other anglers.
