The Story
A hatch that brings large trout to the surface, draws in anglers from all over the country, and covers surrounding areas of stream with massive stoneflies, the salmonfly hatch isnt something to miss, and the Fluttering Stone Fly is an excellent imitation for these massive stoneflies. The Fluttering Stone Fly was invented by Ken Morrish, and one thing that he noticed about a lot of salmonfly patterns is that their heads were heavily hackled, while the naturals have a slender head profile. Taking this into consideration, Ken began playing around until he came up with the Fluttering Stone Fly--an adult salmonfly tied with an extended foam body, realistic biot tails, a deer hair wing equipped with a hotspot for those fast currents and low light situations, and rubber legs for movement.
A super effective fly, the Fluttering Stone Fly is a great pattern to tackle the salmonfly hatch with, and not only does it give a very realistic profile, it is very durable and floats well even in those swift canyon riffles. Fish it over rising fish or prospect during the peak of the salmonfly hatch and you are sure to find out why the Fluttering Stone Fly is such a popular pattern.
