The Story

El Pescador Lodge sits on the Caribbean side of Ambergris Caye, a short hop from San Pedro, and puts anglers on classic Belizean flats for Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon with experienced local guides and easy boat access to sheltered lagoons and reef-side shallows. Between fishing days, guests settle into airy beachfront rooms or private villas, cool off in the pools, and choose from a full slate of island activities like snorkeling and diving on the nearby barrier reef, paddling the mangroves, or biking into town. The atmosphere is welcoming and family-run, service is polished without pretense, and the onsite shop and complimentary loaner tackle make it simple to arrive light and start fishing. If your goal is a first bonefish, a focused shot at a permit, or a summertime encounter with migratory tarpon, El Pescador delivers a proven mix of access, comfort, and warm Belizean hospitality.

Who It’s For

  • Flats anglers

  • Families and groups

When To Go

Fishing at El Pescador is productive throughout the year, though certain months favor specific species. Bonefish and Permit are resident on the flats year-round, providing consistent opportunities in nearly any season. The prime window for larger migratory Tarpon runs from May through August, when fish over 100 pounds move through the coastal channels and lagoons. Resident Tarpon in the 20–80 pound range are available all year, so anglers can always find shots at the Silver King.

Belize’s climate remains warm and tropical, with average daily highs in the low to mid-80s and light coastal breezes keeping conditions comfortable. The dry season, from February through May, offers the most stable weather and clear water, while summer and early fall bring occasional afternoon showers and the arrival of big Tarpon. Even in the rainy season, most days see plenty of sun between short tropical squalls. For anglers seeking the best mix of consistent weather and active fish, spring through early summer is ideal, but there truly isn’t a bad time to visit El Pescador.

Bonefish

Bonefish are abundant around Ambergris Caye, with productive flats located just minutes from the lodge. Most fish weigh between two and three pounds, and they’re often found tailing in shallow turtle grass or cruising over white sand. Anglers can target them from the skiff or wade select hard-bottom flats when tides allow. These Bonefish are eager feeders that respond well to small shrimp and crustacean patterns, offering consistent action and plenty of opportunities for both new and experienced flats anglers.

Permit

Permit are a prized target at El Pescador, and Ambergris Caye offers some of the best habitat for them anywhere in Belize. Anglers encounter fish from five to over thirty pounds on the turtle grass flats, sandbars, and channels surrounding the island. Most shots come while poling, though there are occasional opportunities to wade firm-bottomed flats when conditions are right. Like anywhere else in the world, Permit here can be challenging, but the guides’ local knowledge of tides and feeding behavior makes a real difference. Crab and shrimp imitations presented quietly to cruising or tailing fish is the standard approach, and any successful hookup is a moment to remember.

Tarpon

El Pescador offers year-round access to Tarpon, with both resident and migratory fish found in the waters surrounding Ambergris Caye. Resident Tarpon ranging from 20 to 80 pounds inhabit the mangrove channels and back lagoons throughout the year, while larger migratory fish often exceeding 100 pounds arrive from June through August. Most Tarpon fishing is done from the skiff, sight-casting to rolling or laid-up fish in calm lagoons or deeper channels. A well-placed cast and firm strip set lead to explosive jumps and long, powerful runs, making every hookup an unforgettable moment. Whether targeting the smaller resident fish or the silver giants of summer, El Pescador’s guides know the tides, light, and structure that give anglers the best chances at success.

Other Species

While Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon are the main draw, the waters around Ambergris Caye hold plenty of other willing targets. Barracuda, Jacks, and Snook are common throughout the area and provide exciting alternatives when tides or light make the flats challenging. Fast-moving Barracuda smash baitfish patterns or plugs, while Snook lurk in shaded mangroves and channels waiting to ambush a fly. Jack Crevalle and other reef species, such as Snapper and Triggerfish, add variety and power to any day on the water. Whether you’re exploring the backcountry lagoons or drifting near the barrier reef, these species round out the experience and keep rods bent between shots at the big three.

Boats

Anglers at El Pescador fish from 23-foot panga skiffs, which are perfectly suited for the mix of open flats and sheltered lagoons surrounding Ambergris Caye. Each boat is powered by a quiet four-stroke outboard and features a raised poling platform, ample casting space, and dry storage for gear. The shallow draft allows guides to access skinny flats where Bonefish and Permit feed, while still providing a smooth, stable ride across open water. Most days are spent with two anglers per skiff, alternating on the bow as the guide poles the boat in search of fish. Coolers stocked with lunch and drinks are always on board, and every detail of the setup is designed for comfort, efficiency, and success on the flats.

Equipment

A range of rod sizes with matched reels will be necessary for a week at El Pescador. We recommend bringing 3 rods: an 8wt for Bonefish, a 9wt for Permit, and a 10-12wt for Tarpon. Your guides will help you rig appropriately for the day's fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.

Lodging

Accommodations

El Pescador offers two styles of lodging that blend Caribbean charm with modern comfort. The main lodge features fourteen air-conditioned guest rooms, each with a private bath and either one king or two queen beds. Rooms open onto covered porches facing the sea and are only steps from the pool, bar, and dining area, creating a relaxed, social atmosphere that suits solo travelers, couples, and small groups.

For those wanting more space or privacy, the private villas provide a home-style alternative. Each two-story villa includes one to three bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a comfortable living and dining area that opens onto a large veranda overlooking the Caribbean. Villas are equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and satellite television, making them ideal for families or groups of friends traveling together. Whether staying in the lodge or a villa, guests enjoy daily housekeeping, friendly service, and a setting that keeps them close to the water and the heart of the property.

Food

Meals at El Pescador highlight fresh, local ingredients and a casual, social dining style. Breakfast is cooked to order each morning, with options like eggs, fruit, and traditional Belizean fare. Lunches are packed for the boat so anglers can eat whenever the day’s fishing allows. Each afternoon, appetizers are served at the bar alongside cold Belikin beer, rum drinks, and soft beverages. Dinner follows in the open-air dining room, where guests gather for family-style or buffet meals featuring local seafood, grilled meats, and seasonal produce. The kitchen can accommodate dietary restrictions with advance notice, and meals are consistently well prepared and satisfying after a full day on the water.

Connectivity

Despite its quiet island setting, El Pescador offers dependable connectivity for guests who need to stay in touch. Complimentary Wi-Fi covers the main lodge, guest rooms, and private villas, with a stable enough signal for email, messaging, and light browsing. Cell service is generally available on Ambergris Caye, and most international carriers work with roaming plans or local SIM cards purchased in San Pedro. Electrical outlets are standard 110-volt U.S. style, so no adapters are required. While many guests choose to unplug during their stay, staying connected for work or travel logistics is simple and reliable.

FAQ

What skill level is required for this trip?

El Pescador is well-suited for anglers of all experience levels, from complete beginners to seasoned flats veterans. The guides are patient instructors who tailor each day to match your skill and comfort level, and complimentary casting lessons are offered most afternoons on the dock. New anglers can expect plenty of opportunities to practice spotting and presenting flies to Bonefish, while experienced guests will find the technical challenge of Permit or Tarpon fishing both demanding and rewarding. Some practice with saltwater casting before the trip is helpful, but no previous experience is required to enjoy the fishing here.

Is El Pescador Lodge Family Friendly?

Yes, El Pescador Lodge is very family friendly. The property’s layout, mix of accommodations, and wide range of activities make it an easy destination for families and mixed groups. Private villas provide comfortable shared spaces for families, while the pools, beach, and easy access to town keep everyone entertained. Non-anglers can spend their days snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or exploring San Pedro, and the staff is known for being warm and accommodating with children. Whether guests are fishing or simply relaxing, the lodge’s relaxed, welcoming atmosphere works well for families of all sizes.

Is traveling to Belize safe?

Belize is generally considered a safe and welcoming destination for visitors. El Pescador’s location on Ambergris Caye is especially secure and relaxed, and the lodge staff assists with all transfers and logistics from arrival to departure.

Do I fish from the boat or wade?

Most of the fishing at El Pescador is done from the skiff, where your guide poles the boat quietly across the flats while you cast from the bow. This allows easy access to a wide range of habitats, including deeper channels and lagoon systems where Tarpon and Permit are often found. There are also several hard-bottomed flats nearby that are suitable for wading, and anglers can choose to get out and stalk Bonefish on foot when tides and conditions allow. Whether you stay in the boat or wade depends on your preference, mobility, and the day’s conditions, and guides will adjust the approach to match your comfort and goals.

Can I mix fly fishing and conventional fishing in my group?

Yes, both fly and conventional anglers are welcome at El Pescador, and guides are comfortable accommodating either style. Groups can easily mix the two, with one person casting flies while another uses spinning gear. The lodge keeps a selection of quality spinning rods available for guest use, and the guides are happy to recommend lures or techniques suited to local conditions. If preferences within a group differ widely, such as one angler wanting to fish the flats while another prefers deeper reef edges, it’s often best to book separate boats so each person can focus on their preferred style of fishing.

Are there mosquitoes or biting insects?

Yes, there are mosquitoes and sand flies, as in most tropical environments, so it’s best to come prepared. Bring insect repellent or wipes, and pack lightweight long-sleeved shirts and pants for evenings or calm conditions when bugs are more active.

Are non-anglers welcome at the lodge?

Yes, non-anglers are very welcome at El Pescador. The lodge offers a full range of activities beyond fishing, including snorkeling, scuba diving, paddle boarding, kayaking, and guided excursions to nearby reefs or Mayan ruins. Guests can also relax by the pool, visit the spa, or explore the shops and restaurants of San Pedro. Whether joining an angler or traveling independently, non-fishing guests have plenty to do and are fully included in the social atmosphere of the lodge.

How many other anglers will be there?

El Pescador is a mid-sized lodge that typically hosts between a dozen and twenty anglers in a given week. At full capacity, the property can accommodate around 30 to 40 guests, including families and non-anglers, though it rarely feels crowded due to its open layout and multiple pools and villas. Most anglers fish two per boat with a private guide, and even during busy periods, the atmosphere remains relaxed and friendly.

Is there cell service or internet at the lodge?

Yes, there is both cell service and internet at the lodge. The Wi-Fi covers the guest rooms, villas, and common areas and is reliable for email, messaging, and moderate web use. For mobile phones, Ambergris Caye has coverage, so if you have international roaming or a local SIM, you should get service without issue. The outlets are U.S. standard 110V.

Is the water safe to drink?

Yes. The lodge provides purified drinking water at all times, and bottled water is available in rooms and on the boats.

Do I need to bring my own flies and tackle?

We recommend that anglers bring their own rods, reels, and lines they’re comfortable using, as personal setups are typically tuned to individual casting preferences. It’s also best to pack your own flies, leaders, and tippet so you have exactly what you need without relying on lodge inventory. That said, El Pescador provides complimentary loaner Orvis rods and reels for guests who prefer to travel light, and the on-site fly shop carries a solid selection of local patterns and tackle essentials. Trident sends a detailed packing and gear list upon booking to help you prepare and ensure you have everything required for the trip.

What is the weather like?

Belize has a warm, tropical climate that stays comfortable throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically range from the low 80s to the low 90s Fahrenheit, with slightly cooler evenings in the 70s. The dry season runs from February through May and offers the most stable weather and clear skies, while the wetter months from June through October bring occasional afternoon showers that pass quickly. Even during the rainy season, most days include plenty of sunshine. Steady coastal breezes help keep temperatures comfortable, and water temperatures stay in the upper 70s to low 80s year-round, ideal for flats fishing and wading.

Is tipping customary?

Yes, tipping is customary at El Pescador and an important way to recognize the effort of your guide and lodge staff. Guide gratuities typically range from $100 to $200 per boat per day in U.S. cash, given directly to your guide at the end of each fishing day. For lodge staff, a pooled tip of $20 to $40 per guest per day is customary and can be settled at the end of your stay in either cash or by adding it to your final bill. These guidelines are flexible and should reflect the level of service you receive throughout your trip.

What happens if I’m injured during the trip, and should I purchase travel insurance?

Medical emergencies and evacuations can happen in remote destinations, which is why we strongly recommend enrolling with Global Rescue before your trip. Global Rescue provides industry-leading medical and security evacuation services, and they also offer comprehensive travel insurance plans serviced through IMG. This all-in-one solution allows anglers to secure both emergency evacuation coverage and travel insurance through a single provider, helping ensure you’re protected if something unexpected occurs before or during your trip.
