The Story

An excellent hook for an excellent pattern, Daiichi’s 1167 Klinkhammer Hooks are just what you need whenever you’re stocking the box with Klinkhammers. A super-effective pattern, the Klinkhammer was designed by Hans van Klinken in the early 80s for imitating emerging caddis, but since then, this pattern has become universally effective when trout are slashing at emergers. The 1167 Klinkhammer Hook is designed around this pattern and features a curved shank, wide gap, straight eye, and slightly heavy wire that allows your fly to rest just in the surface tension. Daiichi makes this hook with a black nickel finish in sizes 8 through 20 so that you can imitate anything from caddis and mayflies all the way down to small midges, and although the 1167 Hook was made with the Klinkhammer in mind, it’s also a great choice for tying various other emergers, caddis/midge larvae, and scuds/sowbugs.

Uses

The 1167 Klinkhammer Hook is an obvious choice when tying Klinkhammer flies, but this hook can also be used for tying various other emerger patterns, caddis/midge larvae and pupae, and even amphipods like scuds and sowbugs.

Comparisons

Hanak’s Competition 390BL Klinkhammer Hooks are a fine alternative to Daiichi’s 1167 Klinkhammer. The 390BL also sports a curved shank, but the shank is a little shorter than that found on Daiichi’s 1167; also, the 390BL Hook is barbless whereas the 1167 has a barb. Another alternative is Daiichi’s 1160 Hook, which has the exact same shape, curve, and range of sizes, but has a bronze finish instead of the black nickel finish that the 1167 has. Regardless of the choice you make here, all of these are reliable options when tying Klinkhammers and other emerger patterns.
