The Story

From large articulated stonefly and mayfly nymphs to small scuds and sowbugs, Daiichi's 1150 Heavy Wide Gape Hooks will let you tie perfect imitations of a wide range of forage. Featuring a continuous bend with a wide gap and slightly upturned eye, this hook gives excellent hooking and holding power, while its unique shape allows you to imitate curved-bodied insects as well as flat-bodied nymphs. Daiichi makes this sharp hook with a 1x heavy wire, which adds a bit of weight while also increasing strength during tough battles, and with sizes ranging from an 8 to an 18, the 1150 allows you to match the hatch for both large and small insects.

Uses

Daiichi's 1150 Heavy Wide Gape Hooks is a pretty versatile tying platform and you can use it to tie nymphs, larvae, pupae, worms, and even some egg patterns. This hook is a great choice for tying more classic patterns, yet it also excels whenever you want to tie more modern articulated nymphs that match large forage such as stoneflies and green drake or hex nymphs.

Comparisons

Daiichi's 1150 Heavy Wide Gape Hooks is really such a unique hook that there isn't a super comparable substitute out there. However, if you're really in a pinch, a hook with a semi-similar construction and bend is Mustad's 37160-BR Wide Gap Caddis Hook. Mustad's version offers a wide gap with an upturned eye, but the bend is much more exaggerated. You can use both of these hooks to tie various nymphs, pupae, and worm patterns, but if you're after the original shape of the 1150 Heavy Wide Gape Hooks, it's best to stick with the original.
