Cortland Guide Series Spare Spool is the simple upgrade that makes your Guide Series reel ready for more water and more situations. Load one spool with a sink tip for streamers and another with a floating line for dries, then swap setups fast when the bite changes. It is also a smart backup for travel, so a damaged line or a surprise hatch does not end your day. Built to stay light, hold plenty of backing, and keep the cost reasonable, this spare spool is an easy way to add versatility without buying a second reel.
Design
This spare spool is built around a large arbor layout for quicker line pickup and clean line management. The spool uses performance-forward porting to cut weight and help the spool dry faster after a wet day on the river. It is designed to drop into the Cortland Guide Series reel, giving you a secure, no-fuss swap when you want to change lines or carry a second rig.
Finish
The Guide Series Spare Spool is built for regular freshwater use, with a protective exterior finish that helps it handle day-to-day wear like boat rides, wet wading, and sandy riverbanks. The look is clean and purpose-built, matching the Guide Series reel so your setup stays consistent and streamlined.
Materials
Cortland constructs the Guide Series Spare Spool out of cast aluminum. This keeps the spool lightweight and affordable while still giving you the strength you need for long days, full backing loads, and hard runs from fish like bass and trout.
Drag
Type: This is a spare spool, so it does not include its own drag system. The drag lives in the reel, and this spool is made to work with the Guide Series reel's drag once installed.
Materials: Because the drag system is housed in the reel, the drag stack materials are part of the reel, not the spare spool.
Arbor Size
Large arbor design helps you pick up line faster and reduces tight coils, especially when you are stripping line in and out all day. It also gives you room to carry the backing you need when a strong fish heads downstream and does not stop.
Warranty
For the first two years of ownership, Cortland will cover defects in material or workmanship found in their Guide Series Spare Spool. This warranty does not cover damages due to fire, theft, loss, or accidents. If damage occurs that is not due to defects in material or workmanship, Cortland offers a repair or replacement service that, as of March 2025, costs $50.
