Â
When To Go
The season at Bay Flats Lodge runs year-round, with the most consistent sight-fishing typically found from March through June and again from late September through November. Spring brings warming water, stable conditions, and excellent visibility, making it ideal for spotting tailing redfish in shallow water. Fall offers some of the most aggressive fishing of the year as redfish feed heavily on shrimp and baitfish ahead of winter. Summer can be hot, but early mornings often bring calm winds and active fish, with midday breaks helping anglers beat the heat. Winter is more variable, with cold fronts occasionally limiting access, but between fronts, low tides and clear skies can produce excellent redfish opportunities. No matter the season, the Texas coast delivers action and solitude across a vast and lightly pressured fishery.
Â
Redfish
Redfish are the main attraction at Bay Flats Lodge, and the surrounding marshes, back lakes, and shorelines offer some of the best sight-fishing for them anywhere on the Gulf Coast. This expansive fishery spans more than 100,000 acres of tidal flats, grass-lined creeks, and protected shoreline, creating ideal conditions for stalking redfish in shallow water. Most fish range from 5 to 10 pounds, with regular opportunities at larger singles and small groups tailing or cruising in less than a foot of water. Anglers can expect visual shots at fish throughout the day. For fly anglers who love sight-fishing in technical but rewarding conditions, this part of the Texas coast delivers consistent opportunities and unpressured water all season long.
Â
Other Species
While redfish are the primary target at Bay Flats Lodge, the surrounding waters also hold a variety of other species that add surprise and variety to the day. Black drum are common in the same shallow zones and can often be spotted tailing alongside reds. These fish grow large, fight hard, and readily eat a well-placed crab or shrimp pattern. Sheepshead, sometimes called the “Texas permit,” are another exciting challenge; sharp-eyed and spooky, they reward precise presentations and quiet approaches. During warmer months, anglers can encounter blitzing jacks and occasionally sharks on the flats, offering explosive takes and serious pulling power. These bonus species round out the experience and keep every cast interesting.
Â
Boats
Each guide at Bay Flats Lodge runs a technical flats skiff designed for quietly poling in extremely shallow water. These boats are built for stealth and stability, with clean casting decks, ample rod storage, and plenty of room for two anglers and a guide. While models vary slightly by guide, all are purpose-built for sight-fishing the Texas coast and equipped to handle the region’s shallow marshes, back lakes, and windy conditions.
Â
Equipment
A typical setup at Bay Flats Lodge includes a 7- to 9-weight rod and reel for redfish, black drum, and sheepshead, with a 10- or 11-weight as a great backup for jacks or sharks. Fast-action rods paired with tropical floating lines are best for delivering quick, accurate casts in coastal wind. While many anglers prefer to bring their own gear, the lodge provides high-quality Sage rods and reels at no additional cost. Upon booking, Trident supplies a detailed recommended tackle list to help you prepare and pack with confidence.

FAQ

What skill level is required for this trip?
Bay Flats Lodge is a great fit for anglers of all skill levels. Beginners will benefit from patient, experienced guides and access to quality gear, while intermediate and advanced anglers will appreciate the technical sight-fishing and challenging conditions. That said, anglers who can cast 30 to 50 feet with accuracy, especially in windy conditions, will have the best chance of success. If you're newer to saltwater fly fishing, some pre-trip casting practice will go a long way.
Â
Is BFL Family Friendly?
Yes, Bay Flats Lodge is family friendly and welcomes guests of all ages. The lodge offers comfortable accommodations for families and groups, flexible scheduling, and a relaxed, social atmosphere. Children are welcome on guided fishing trips, and the staff is happy to tailor the experience to younger anglers or non-fishing guests. Whether you're traveling with kids, a spouse, or extended family, BFL is a great place to enjoy time together on and off the water.
Â
Do I have to wade fish, or can I stay in the boat?
Wade fishing is completely optional. Most fishing is done from the skiff, and guides are happy to tailor the day to your preference. If you’d like to wade, let the lodge know in advance and bring proper footwear or arrange a rental.
Â
Can I mix fly fishing and conventional fishing in my group?
Yes. Bay Flats Lodge is flexible and can accommodate mixed-method groups. Some guests fly fish while others use spin gear, and guides are experienced in managing both styles on the same skiff if needed.
Â
What is the best airport to fly into?
Corpus Christi is the closest commercial airport, about 1.5 hours from the lodge. Houston, San Antonio, and Austin are also good options, each roughly a 3-hour drive. Guests typically rent a car and drive to the lodge.
Â
Are there mosquitoes or biting insects?
Yes, especially during warmer months or in calm conditions near the marsh. Bring insect repellent and consider lightweight long sleeves and pants for protection, particularly in the evenings or while wading.
Â
Are non-anglers welcome at the lodge?
Yes, non-anglers are welcome at Bay Flats Lodge. The relaxed setting, comfortable accommodations, and friendly staff make it an enjoyable destination even for those who don’t plan to fish. Non-angling guests can spend their days relaxing at the lodge, exploring the coastal surroundings, or joining fishing outings as observers. The lodge is a great option for couples, families, or groups with mixed interests.
Â
How many other anglers will be there?
Bay Flats Lodge accommodates up to 35 guests, but the fly fishing program is limited to a maximum of 12 anglers at a time. This ensures a quiet, low-pressure experience on the water. Other guests at the lodge may be conventional bay fishing or waterfowl hunting, depending on the season. With each guide hosting just two anglers per skiff and access to a vast, lightly pressured fishery, the fly fishing experience remains intimate and uncrowded.
Â
Do I need travel insurance?
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. We recommend Travel Guard, a well-established insurance company offering excellent, affordable policies for angling travel.
Â
What happens if I'm injured or have an emergency requiring evacuation?
Every situation is different when medical and security emergencies happen. To ensure you’re protected when things don’t go as planned, we highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue.
Â
Is there cell service or internet at the lodge?
The lodge offers reliable Wi-Fi throughout the property, including guest rooms and common areas, making it easy to check email, message family, or browse online. However, cell service is generally spotty in this rural coastal area and should not be relied upon during your stay. Most guests find the limited signal a welcome break and a chance to fully unplug between fishing sessions.
Â
Do I need to bring my own flies and tackle?
No, you do not need to bring your own flies or tackle. Bay Flats Lodge provides high-quality Sage fly rods, reels, and lines at no additional cost. Guides are fully equipped with everything you’ll need on the water, including flies, leaders, and tippet. If you have a favourite rod or fly selection, you’re welcome to bring it, but it’s not required. Trident also provides a detailed gear list upon booking if you prefer to pack your own equipment.
Â
What is the weather like?
The weather on the Texas coast varies by season but is generally mild to warm year-round. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions, with moderate temperatures, light winds, and excellent visibility. These seasons are ideal for sight-fishing. Summer is hot and humid, with calm mornings and active fish early in the day, followed by midday heat and the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. Winter brings cooler temperatures and occasional cold fronts, but between fronts, clear skies and low tides can produce excellent fishing. Regardless of the season, anglers should be prepared for sun, wind, and changing conditions on the water.
Â
Is tipping customary?
Yes, tipping is customary at Bay Flats Lodge and is an important way to recognize the efforts of the guides and staff. For fishing guides, $150 to $200 per boat per day is standard, typically shared between two anglers. For lodge staff, including housekeeping and kitchen crews, $10 to $20 per guest per day is typical. Tips can be given directly or handed to the lodge manager for distribution. While not mandatory, gratuities are greatly appreciated and go a long way toward supporting the team that makes your trip memorable.
